Large Hadron Collider goes online Sept. 10

CERN announced that the first attempt to circulate a beam through the Large Hadron Collider will be on September 10th, 2008.

Some photos of the LHC.

What do you think of this?

The photos are cool.

As the scientist among this motley crew, what is the point and what is the real risk of a "black hole" as posited by some of the commentors?

By the way, I heartily recommend the Skeptoid podcast. You can read the transcripts or you can subscribe to the podcast (which I recommend) either at the web site or from iTunes. As Brian Dunning himself will tell you (in episode #100, I believe) don’t rely on Skeptoid as authoritative, but check out anything he says that sounds a bit off. For my fellow theists among us, Mr. Dunning is an atheist, but not of the intolerant Steven Hawking variety, so don’t let that stop you from listening with an open, critical, and skeptical mind.

I just think it is extremely cool. I never worked on particle accelerators of this magnitude. Even the rather small ones I have been to are rather awe inspiring.

I don't think I have the expertise to comment on the physics of this experiment. I just want to point out one aspect that is usually not in the media coverage. Project like this keeps a good number of physicists employed and doing good science. Too bad, the US canceled the Super Collider years ago. Otherwise, the activities would be right in Texas.

There are some quite convincing discussions about the un-likelihood of a black hole of earth devouring magnitude developing in the LHC. Personally, I found giving a "black hole" almost mystical property and overlooking the actual physics is rather ludicrous.

On the other hand, I would love to see zombies and headcrabs coming out the portal. Anyone played Halflife here?
